Distal radius fractures are a type of wrist fracture that often occur due to a fall onto an outstretched hand. Among the various types of distal radius fractures, Colles’ fracture is the most common. This fracture is named after the Irish surgeon Abraham Colles, who first described it in 1814.

Colles’ fracture is a type of distal radius fracture that occurs when the radius bone in the forearm breaks near the wrist joint. This fracture is usually caused by a fall onto an outstretched hand, and is more common in older individuals due to decreased bone density. In addition, Colles’ fracture is more common in women than in men.

Symptoms of Colles’ fracture include pain, swelling, and tenderness around the wrist joint, as well as difficulty moving the wrist or gripping objects. In some cases, the fractured bone may be visible or protrude through the skin.

The treatment for Colles’ fracture depends on the severity of the injury. In some cases, a cast or splint may be used to immobilize the wrist and allow the bone to heal. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to realign the broken bone and hold it in place with pins, screws, or plates.

After treatment, physical therapy may be recommended to help restore strength and mobility to the wrist joint. This may involve exercises to improve range of motion, as well as grip and wrist strength.

It is important to seek prompt medical attention for a suspected distal radius fracture, as delayed treatment can lead to complications such as improper healing, decreased wrist function, and chronic pain. In addition, older individuals and those with decreased bone density may be at increased risk for complications such as osteoporosis and further fractures.

Preventing distal radius fractures involves taking steps to reduce the risk of falls, such as maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine to improve balance and strength, wearing proper footwear, and removing tripping hazards from the home. In addition, individuals with decreased bone density may benefit from supplements such as calcium and vitamin D, as well as medications to help improve bone density.

In conclusion, Colles’ fracture is a common type of distal radius fracture that can cause significant pain and loss of function. Treatment options include immobilization with a cast or splint, as well as surgery in more severe cases. Physical therapy may also be recommended to aid in recovery. Prevention involves taking steps to reduce the risk of falls, maintaining bone health, and seeking prompt medical attention for suspected injuries.
